SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. It is a protocol developed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, also known as the IAOMT, to help reduce mercury exposure during the removal of mercury-containing amalgam fillings.
SMART amalgam removal is a set of safety recommendations used when removing dental amalgam fillings. Dental amalgam fillings contain mercury, and the removal process can release mercury vapor and particles if not handled carefully. The goal of SMART is to help reduce exposure for the patient, dentist, dental team, and treatment environment during the procedure.
